Chris Eells, a member of Mountain Park Chapter in Stone Mountain,
was selected as the Georgia DeMolay Online "DeMolay of the Month" for July
2003. Chris has been an active member of Georgia DeMolay since July of 1998. He
is currently serving as State Senior Councilor. He holds the Degree of Chevalier,
the Blue Honor Key, the Lamp of Knowledge Award, the Founder's Membership Award, and
the Representative DeMolay Award. We sat down with Chris to learn a little more
about him....
GDO:
Chris, congratulations on your selection as GDO's July DeMolay of the
Month. We want our web site visitors to learn a little more about you and
your DeMolay career. How did you find out about and get involved with
DeMolay?
Chris:
My older brother, Bob Eells, got involved through some friends when he was
in high school. I started coming to meetings with him and my mother, but I
was too young to join, so I sat outside and looked at scrapbooks and helped
the parents club with their duties. Then, when I was old enough, they
initiated me into the order.
GDO:
What do you like best about DeMolay?
Chris:
My favorite part about DeMolay... this is a tough question. I think that I
enjoy the leadership development that DeMolay offers. I have always enjoyed
being a leader, and DeMolay offers many opportunities for everyone to lead.
I really think it is cool that a young member has an opportunity to lead the
chapter as Master Councilor, and the fact that the older guys respect not
only his office, but also him as a person, seals the deal. This order has
shown me much that I am sure I will use later on.

Chris is known for always having fun at DeMolay. Here, he's joking around with newly- installed Grand Worthy Advisor Laura Klenke.

GDO:
Conclave is just moments away. Give us a little preview of what's to come
this weekend.
Chris:
Wow, this Conclave is going to be HUGE. We have got a ton of great stuff
planned. Last year we changed a lot of things, and it was awesome. This
year we have tweaked our plan a little bit, and I think it is going to be the
best Conclave anyone has attended in a while. We have a lot of out-of-state
guests who will be attending, and I am sure that they will be impressed.
GDO:
Not to jinx anything, but you're expected to be elected State Master
Councilor at this weekend's Conclave. What are some of the plans for your
term this next year?
Chris:
Well, first of all let me go ahead and knock on wood. Ok, now that I have
done that I think we are good to go. I am very excited about the Strategic
Plan that we will be presenting to the members this year at Conclave. In
it, we outline the basic strategy we will be working with throughout this
next term. The State Officers have been working diligently on this plan, and
the best part is that after the topic discussions, we are going to add some
things to fit the plan around some of the issues the members discuss as
being important to them.
GDO:
Let's switch gears a bit to the local level. Your home chapter of Mountain
Park has recently had one of the biggest membership booms we've seen in some
time. You've been a major contributor to the membership growth, bringing in
a large number of members and earning a Blue Honor Key in the process. I
know all the younger DeMolays in Georgia are dying to know: What's your
secret? How do you sell DeMolay so well?

Chris:
I am going to be honest here. The membership growth my chapter has enjoyed
is directly related to the team spirit we have been building up at Mountain
Park, and throughout the state. We, as a chapter, decided that membership
was everyone's responsibility. As far as my personal efforts, it is simple.
I have fallen in love with DeMolay. I just try to talk about all the fun
things we do in DeMolay, and I have yet to meet a teenager who can turn it
down. Also we have been working with the Masonic lodges near us. We just
went out and spoke to the Masons about what DeMolay can offer, and they did
not hesitate to get their loved ones involved.
GDO:
Obviously, the daunting task of State Master Councilor is pretty much
overshadowing any thoughts past this next year with respect to DeMolay.
However, what are your goals for your future after your SMC term in
DeMolay?
Chris:
I would love to see DeMolay get the recognition it deserves. I think that
DeMolay should, and one day will, enjoy the same high esteem that the Boy
Scouts and other youth groups enjoy. I would love to hear that colleges are
impressed by Chevalier as much as they are by the Eagle Scout. As far as the
immediate future, I think that after my term as SMC I will try to help
Julius and the others after him plan and execute their terms.
GDO:
You've been accepted to and are planning to attend Georgia Tech next year.
Congratulations!
Chris:
Thank you, I am very excited about attending Georgia Tech.

Chris takes a moment to chat with Jodie Bennett (left) and Brittney Boynton.

GDO:
What's your intended major at Tech, and how do you plan to
integrate your DeMolay and collegiate lives?
Chris:
I am majoring in Public Policy. Part of the reason I chose Georgia
Tech was its location. As it is close to my home chapter, I hope to
stay active with my chapter after my term as SMC.
GDO:
Outside of DeMolay, what are some of your other interests and activities?
Chris:
I am a member of the Mountain Park United Methodist Church Youth Group. I
also have played drums pretty much all of my life. I like to golf, play
frisbee, and just have fun with my friends.
GDO:
Thank you for your time, Chris, and congratulations again on your selection
as GDO's DeMolay of the Month!
Chris:
Thank you for the honor. I hope to see everyone as the year progresses.
